Lenten Meditation-Mark 2:16-17

Jesus Calls Levi

16When the scribes of the Pharisees saw that he was eating with sinners and tax-collectors, they said to his disciples, ‘Why does he eat with tax-collectors and sinners?’ 17When Jesus heard this, he said to them, ‘Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick; I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.’

Jesus talks to the scribes of the Pharisees, all righteous men; men who believe that they are good with God. These are sure that the keep the law like no others, they see themselves as great spiritual leaders and they are certain of their righteousness.  But Jesus did not come to call the righteous.  And in this passage, Jesus does not condemn these prideful men. This is a call to the sinners that can be healed. These are the sinners that know that they are sinners.

Prayer: Lord, I must acknowledge my sins.  I must believe that at my core is sin. I must believe that only through You can I be saved from that sin. I must remember that no amount of good works, good intentions or self-spiritualism can ever bring me to salvation without you. And I must remember that you will be there to heal me every time that I ask Amen.
