The Tradition of the Elders

Lenten Meditation-Mark 7:20-23

The Pharisees are worried about hand washing. Jesus Rebukes:

20And he said, ‘It is what comes out of a person that defiles. 21For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: fornication, theft, murder, 22adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly. 23All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.’

Meditation–pray:

“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner–Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner–Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner–Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner.”

Over and over again the prayer goes through my mind. I know that in my heart lies sin:

“fornication, theft, murder, 22adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly.”

They are there always; defiled waste; evil rot. It cannot be erased. It should not be denied. It must be dealt with…”Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner.” Paul said:

17pray without ceasing, 18give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19Do not quench the Spirit. 20Do not despise the words of prophets,21but test everything; hold fast to what is good; 22abstain from every form of evil.  (1 Thessalonians 5)

Pray with each breath. It’s not easy. The mind wanders.

26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. 27And God,who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. (Romans 8)

For it is from the human heart, that evil intentions come“. What of the Soul? Is it clean or is it foul?

Everything outside is God’s creation. God called it good.

31God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good.(Genesis 1)

It was fouled by the first sin of Adam and Eve. Gardens of delight were lost forever. The responsibility is ours.  We took it upon ourselves. Sin is ours. Pride is the first sin. Pride is the sin that Satan gave us.

What ails us.

Jesus shows us the way. Jesus knows the question and the answer.

The trivial things that fill our lives. These hide the sin within our hearts. Proud foolish pharisees; proud foolish scribes; proud foolish us. Dirty hands are the least of all worries. Look into your hearts. There lies the filth. Do not hide behind a mask, a mask of pride and self-righteousness. Empty yourself. Empty it out. The soul is the vessel and the soul is good. Let the vessel be filled with the Spirit and pray:

“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner.” Amen.
